The challenge

What was getting
in the way

In tier-2 and tier-3 cities, sending something across town often comes down to a shop employee, an auto driver or a personal contact. That can work once in a while, but it gets hard to manage when a business has several drops in a day.

Food ordering brings its own frustrations. Customers can find app prices higher than the restaurant's menu, with fees added at checkout, and restaurants can feel that commission takes too much of each order.

  • No view of the delivery

Without tracking, sender and receiver are left phoning each other to find out where a parcel has got to.

  • Unclear costs

Prices agreed informally or fees added late make it hard to know the real cost of a delivery.

  • Thin restaurant margins

High commission on food orders can make online selling hard for small local restaurants.

The solution

What
we built

  1. 01

    Parcel booking

Customers book a runner on demand or schedule a pickup for later. One order can include several pickup and drop-off points, and the price is shown before they confirm.

Before and after

How the work
changed

People usually ring around to find someone free, then agree a price on the spot.

After

Booked in the app

A customer enters pickup and drop points, sees the price and confirms a runner.

Following an order

Before

Asking for updates

The usual way to check on a delivery is to phone whoever is carrying it.

After

Live on a map

Customers watch the order move and get updates from pickup to final delivery.

Paying

Before

Cash, sorted later

Informal deliveries are often settled by hand once the job is finished.

After

A choice of methods

Customers can pay online, pay on pickup or pay on delivery.

Trust and control

How we kept it
safe and reliable

  • 01

    Price before commitment

Parcel customers see the price before they confirm, rather than settling it afterwards.

    Upfront pricing
  • 02

    Verified runners

Runners go through an application and onboarding, and the app listing describes them as trained and verified.

    Runner onboarding
  • 03

    Payment choice

Customers who would rather not pay in advance can choose to pay on pickup or on delivery.

    Three methods

Faster delivery

Built on tested foundations

Food and parcel orders both run on these shared parts of the app.

  • Order management

Carries food and parcel orders from booking through to delivery.

  • Live location

Shows the runner's progress on a map and sends status updates to the customer.

  • Runner matching

Connects a customer's parcel request with a nearby runner.

  • Payments

Handles online payment alongside the pay-on-pickup and pay-on-delivery options.
