A managed squad can usually start within days, because the team already exists. A scoped project kicks off in 1–2 weeks, once deliverables and milestones are agreed. A fractional CTO engagement starts with a review of your architecture, costs and delivery risks. In every model we connect to your tools and agree working hours first.
A managed squad has a flat monthly fee per squad, with no hourly bills. A project is fixed price or phased, depending on how certain the scope is. A fractional CTO works on a monthly plan with no long-term lock-in. After a first call we suggest the right model and give you a rough quote range.
Before delivery begins, we agree the deliverables, architecture, milestones, dependencies, acceptance criteria and how changes will be handled. Exclusions and assumptions are written down too. You then get weekly updates and working demos, so you can see progress against that scope at every stage.
You can change models as your needs change. Many clients start with a project for a defined launch, add a managed squad for ongoing development, and bring in a fractional CTO when they need senior technical leadership. Ownership of the code and IP stays with you whichever model you use.
You own the code and IP in every model, and the agreement sets out the IP assignment from the start. Project delivery also includes source code, infrastructure definitions, documentation and a structured handover. Fractional CTO work hands over all plans and documents. Hiring, payroll and office costs stay with us.
A fractional CTO makes sense when you need experienced technical leadership but not a full-time executive yet.
