The challenge

What was getting
in the way

Many people who try to track what they eat give up early. Typing in every ingredient is tedious, and working out a sensible calorie target can feel like homework.

Food also varies by country, so a recipe list built around one cuisine rarely fits daily life elsewhere. People end up with a diary in one app, a workout log in another and no clear view of the whole day.

  • Logging takes too long

If each meal needs a long search, the habit tends to fade after the first few days.

  • Targets that are hard to set

Calorie and macro numbers mean little to someone who has never had to work them out.

  • Recipes that don't suit

Meal ideas from a far-off kitchen are hard to fit into a normal week of cooking.

The solution

What
we built

  1. 01

A plan from a few questions

New users answer simple questions on height, weight, age, activity and goal. The app suggests a daily calorie target and macro split, and both can be changed at any time.

    Inputs

    Output
    Calories and macros
    Control
    Editable any time
  2. 02

    Several ways to log

People can scan a barcode, read in a nutrition label, search, describe a meal in their own words or simply add the calories. Water, weight and exercise sit in the same screen.

  3. 03

    Meal plans and local recipes

Users pick recipes for the days ahead or fill the whole week in one tap, and each day shows how it compares with the target. Recipes begin with food from the user's country.

Key features

What made it
useful

  • Food quality

    A, B and C grades

Foods carry a letter grade, so people can see at a glance how good a choice is for them without reading the whole label.

    Business impact

    Quick food comparison

  • Recipes

    Cooking by cuisine

Recipes start with local food and go on to kitchens from Indian and Italian to Korean and Caribbean, with a heart to save favourites.

    Business impact

    Recipes that suit home

  • Habits

    Streaks and trends

Users complete each day to keep a streak going, and a weight line shows progress toward their goal in kg or lb.

Before and after

How the work
changed

Setting a target

Before

Own sums

People look up formulas or guess a number that may not suit them.

After

Suggested plan

A few questions produce a daily target and macro split to adjust as needed.

Logging food

Before

Manual entry

Each item is searched for and typed in, one at a time.

After

Scan or describe

A barcode, a label or a sentence is enough to get a meal into the diary.

Planning the week

Before

Separate lists

Recipes and calorie goals live in different places, and rarely line up.

After

One planner

Recipes go onto a weekly plan that shows daily calories against the target.

The business
difference

  1. Logging

    Five logging methods

Meals go in with a tap or two

People log meals by barcode, label, search, description or quick add, and a ring fills as the day's calories come in.

Before: Typing it inAfter: Scan or tap

  2. Planning

    Weekly meal planner

A week of meals in one tap

The planner fills a week of breakfasts, lunches and dinners from recipes, or lets users choose their own, and shows each day against the target.

    Before: Separate listsAfter: One plan

  3. Reach

    iOS and Android

    Available on both phone platforms

myNutrical is on the App Store and Google Play, with recipes and measurements that adapt to where the user lives.

Trust and control

How we kept it
safe and reliable

  • 01

    Clear wellness boundary

The app and its site state that it offers general wellness information, not medical advice, and suggest talking to a doctor or dietitian before big changes.

    Not medical advice
  • 02

    User control of targets

The suggested calorie target and macro split are a starting point, and users can change both whenever they like.

    Editable plan
  • 03

    Plain feature labels

Meal photo logging is marked as coming soon in the app's add screen, so nobody expects it before it exists.

    Honest labels

Faster delivery

Built on tested foundations

These modules feed a single home screen, so food, water, weight and workouts appear together.

  • Onboarding and targets

Turns first-run answers into a calorie target and macro split.

  • Food diary

Holds every entry by meal and adds it up against the day's target.

  • Recipes and planner

Matches recipes to a chosen eating style and places them on a weekly plan.

  • Activity and progress

Tracks water, weight, steps and workouts next to the food log.

answers

Have a different question? Ask it on a 30-minute call.

Ask us on a call

It uses a short set of questions about height, weight, age, activity level and goal. From those answers, myNutrical suggests a daily calorie target and a split of carbs, protein and fat. Users can change both numbers whenever they like, so the plan remains a suggestion they control.
