The challenge

What was getting
in the way

Much of what makes a neighbourhood interesting never shows up online. A new café, a tailor with no signboard or a weekend market may be a short walk away, and people can still hear about it too late.

Local shops face the same gap from the other side. Stock changes daily, but a customer has no easy way to check before walking over, and a wasted trip makes them less likely to try again.

  • Finds that go unnoticed

New or small places can stay unknown to people living a few streets away.

  • Wasted trips

Without seeing current stock, a shopper may walk to a store and find the item sold out.

  • Too many places to look

Shops, events and local groups are often spread across different apps and sites, which makes planning an outing slow.

The solution

What
we built

  1. 01

    Discovery feed

The first screen brings together local shops, this week's events, groups making plans and fresh posts from neighbours, each showing how far away it is.

  2. 02

    Stores, events and groups

Stores show real photos, today's stock and reviews. Events cover festivals, gigs and workshops, with booking where available. Groups list shared interests and plans.

    Spotted and Ask Locals

Residents pin finds to the exact spot and say what is good or not. In Ask Locals, anyone can put a question or poll to their neighbourhood.

Before and after

How the work
changed

Finding somewhere to go

Before

Tabs and word of mouth

People tend to search several apps or rely on what friends happen to mention.

After

One local screen

Discovery shows shops, events, groups and neighbours' posts together, with a distance on each.

Visiting a shop

Before

Walking in unsure

Shoppers usually cannot tell what a small local store has until they arrive.

After

Stock seen in advance

Store pages show real photos, what is in stock and reviews from people who shop there.

Getting local advice

Before

Asking around

Recommendations usually depend on who you know in the area.

After

Ask the neighbourhood

Ask Locals lets people post a question or a poll, and those nearby answer it.

Orders content by where the user is and shows the distance to each item.

  • Posts and media

Handles the photos, short videos and reviews that people and businesses share.

  • Business listings

Lets a shop owner list a store, show products and be found by people nearby.
